I have the most amazing New Mexico adventure day itinerary for you.
It explores New Mexico’s volcanic legacy and its layered indigenous, colonial, and American history.
You’ll visit two national monuments — El Malpaís and El Morro national monuments— as well as the privately owned Ice Cave and Bandera Volcano.
If you’re journeying from Albuquerque, then this makes a great day trip just two hours away from the city. If you’re traveling on your way to or from Petrified Forest National Park, turn off Interstate-40 at Highway 53.
First, stop at El Malpaís National Monument to hike the El Calderon Loop Trail.
Next, enjoy a picnic at the lovely picnic tables near the trail parking lot before driving to your next spot!
Third, visit the Ice Cave and Bandera Volcano. The ice cave is seriously cool — like naturally filled with 20 feet of ice all-year round cool!
Then finally, head to El Morro National Monument to walk the Inscription Rock Trail.
The monument features a natural pool that has drawn travelers for hundreds of years. Many left their marks on the nearby sandstone bluffs, including petroglyphs and inscriptions from Spanish conquistadors, American soldiers, and settlers.
